We assess and prune the existing trees first, so we know how much light there is before we decide what to plant.
Before the design, the trees
On a plot above Cala Jondal, the first work we did was going through the existing trees — checking their health, identifying which were sound and which were a risk next to an active building site, and pruning back to open the light.
The developer got a plot that was safe to work on, trees that would still be there in twenty years, and a planting plan drawn against real conditions.
When we prune palms
A freshly cut palm frond gives off a scent that red palm weevil can pick up from a distance. Pruning a Phoenix palm while the weevil is active draws it to the tree.
So we plan palm pruning for the months when the weevil is least active, and we treat every cut. A palm pruned at the wrong time of year can end up infested.
For the same reason we plant Washingtonia in new gardens — the weevil largely leaves it alone — and treat the Canary palms that are already there.
Structural pruning
Deadwood removed, crown restored, an old tree's framework kept rather than replaced.
Palm work at height
Roped access rather than a machine on the ground, for pruning and red palm weevil treatment alike.
